- HM = Honorable Mention. Iris eligible 3 years after introduction
- AM = Award of Merit. Iris must have won an HM in order to be eligible for an Award of Merit.
- DM = Dykes Medal: highest award for any class of iris.

- Amoena = White standards, colored falls
- Bicolor = Standards and falls different colors
- Bitone = Standards and falls different shades of the same color
- B., Bd. = Beard: fuzzy protrusion in center of falls of bearded irises
- F. = Falls: 3 lower petals of iris flower
- Haft = Top of the falls, (area surrounding the beard)
- Horns or Spoons = end of beard is uplifted to a point, or rounded to spoon shape.
- Luminata = related to plicatas. Falls have a brushed pattern, with paler veins and clear, unmarked area around beards.
- Neglecta = Light blue standards, darker colored falls
- Plic. = Plicata: stippled, dotted or stitched petal edges on a lighter colored ground color
- Reverse = Any of the previous combinations with darker color in standards.
- S., Stds. = Standards: 3 upper petals of iris flower
- Sig. = Signal
- Variegata = Yellow standards, darker colored falls
