CELTIC WOMAN (Aitken ’09) TB, 38" (97cm), E. 8 buds, 3 branches. An exceptionally durable and vigorous plant that carries a very nice sturdy bloom stem. Nicely domed and ruffled pink standards sit atop round and ruffled plicata falls done in a white ground with a broad band of delicate magenta, deepening at the petal base. Beard white blending to coral in the throat. Surely you will be enthralled by the dance of this Celtic woman!

CODE BLUE (Aitken ’09) TB, 36" (91cm), EM. Several years ago we introduced the best red iris that we had seen as ‘Code Red’. It seems fitting that this very exciting light blue with a red beard should get the companion name of CODE BLUE. Exceptionally round and heavily ruffled light sky blue flower with a very bright cherry red beard which is surrounded by a squeaky clean white zone on the falls. Matching ruffled standards have a white blaze on the midribs. A magnificent sight to behold with 3 branches and 8 buds.
Sdlg. #02T49B: (99T14: (Cranberry Delight x Engaging) X 99T53: (95T17: (Cranberry Delight x 87T49: (Unknown x Persian Gown)) x 94T62: (91T59: (88T4: (Designer Gown x Hawaiian Queen) x Hawaiian Queen)) x 91T29: (87T199: (Laced Cotton x Anon))) x Fantasy Lace).
What is amazing is “where did the blue come from?” You have to go all the way back to a grandparent of ‘Hawaiian Queen’ to find ‘Irene Nelson’ (B. Jones ’76) Bennett will be pleased!

EASY BEING GREEN (R. Richards ’09), TB, 40" (102cm.), M. A vigorous grower, this is definitely a show bench iris, opening three and occasionally four flowers at once. Stalks are often close to 4 feet tall in its home garden. Giving a green appearance from a distance, a close examination reveals a pale yellow-green color, with a pastel blue influence in a pale white area below the yellow orange beards, on the style arms, and on the stigmatic lip. Occasional rebloom in the southwest, not tested in the northwest, this TB has produced reblooming seedlings when crossed to rebloomers. Slight fragrance.

MERMAID’S DREAM (L. Markham ’09) BB, 26-1/2" (67cm.) M. FERNIE BRIDGE (S. Markham ’09) MTB, 25" (63.5cm), M. A favorite of our late friend Annie Fernie, who could brighten a room by simply walking into it, and named in her honor, this bright and cheerful little iris lights up any garden. Standards, styles and beards are a bright, clear yellow. The flaring falls are deep raspberry red, shot through with white veining and rimmed with yellow edges. Stems are beautifully branched, with triple-socketed terminals and at least 10 buds, for a long season of bloom. The plant is lovely even out of bloom, quickly forming a tight clump of abundant, clean foliage stained purple at the base. Diploid. Fertile both ways, with cute children in the works.

CUSTOM JEWEL (Aitken ’09) SDB, 9", (23cm.) L, VL, 3buds. This plant unites the two distinct rebloom lines of Allan Ensminger of Nebraska with Chuck Chapman of Ontario, Canada. Both parent plants are northern grown, early summer rebloomers. The result is a very round flower, lightly ruffled, intense yellow, blending lighter at the edges, with striking deep purple beards. While it does not rebloom for us, it is fertile and we will be looking to the next generation for rebloom seedlings.

EXOTIC BLEND (Aitken ’09) SDB, 10" (25cm) 3 buds, ML. This is a really strange color blend. Basically, it is a white ground, gold plicata with a violet wash overlay on the midrib of the standards and over the white spot on the falls. Falls show some violet veins like spokes on a wheel. Beard color is mustard orange with a slight violet tone at the base of the hairs. Good growth, quickly forming nice clumps.

FOURTH OF JULY KID (Aitken ’09) 9" (23cm) E., RE., 3 buds. This plant will not win you any awards. However, its virtue is that it reblooms a full month earlier than any other rebloom SDB that we know of and it is fertile. We see rebloom on the 4th of July every year, thus the name. It is capable of producing very nice seedlings. (See Maui Sunrise ’08) Another population of seedlings is on the way. Form is a bit narrow with upright standards and flared falls. Standards are light yellow blending to light orange at the base. Falls are light yellow blending to a medium orange spot. Beards are medium orange.
